[Why a stack of books doesn't make a good stepladder is demonstrated pretty well when the stack wobbles, Rita slips, and everything crashes to the floor. Several books go with her, and she mutters some choice words. Particularly when one falls right on her head.

Eventually, she sits up in the middle of yet another disaster in the study, clutching her head with a dazed expression that actually has nothing to do with this accident and quite a lot to do with a recent mistletoe curse. Her face goes a few shades of red, even as she berates herself; this is stupid, pointless, and she shouldn't care...right?]

Argh, what am I doing...? There's no way that's normal at all.

There's nothing wrong with it! They just weren't steady!

They will! It was fine until I--until some of those books fell!

And you fell with them. You could seriously hurt yourself if you keep doing that.

You could have, though. You have to think things through more thoroughly.

What I was thinking was that there could've been something dangerous up there! It's not like I'd just leave it.

It wouldn't have mattered if you fell and more than one book hit your head. It can't be that hard to find a stepstool over there.

A stepstool wouldn't stop books from falling off the shelf.

It would have kept you from falling from them.

You can still fall off one of those too, you know! It's not perfect.

It's sturdier than a pile of books. Why are you stubborn over this?

I'm not being stubborn! Why do you care about it, anyway? [Yeah, she's totally being stubborn, which is the only reason she adds that last part.]

Because I don't want you to get hurt just by being careless. [ What does it mean to care for each other?? ]

I-It's not careless! It was just one little accident, okay? [Hell if Rita knows. They are such social geniuses...]

It is careless. I'd be surprised if that's the only time you've fallen. [ Totally. :| What amazing friends. ]

I've never slipped from a stack of books before.
