At the time they appeared many shinigami were present. The usual method of dealing with them is to utilize reiatsu.

We are what some cultures refer to as "reapers", or "gods of death".

Reiatsu is the energy we utilize.

...I don't think any of the mythology I've read mentioned anything like that. [Mythology read being next to none, but the name gives her a good idea, anyway.] Gods of...death, huh? So this energy you use--reiatsu--is a special power you guys have?

Yes.

We use it mainly to defeat Hollows, and usher the dead to Soul Society.

S-Soul Society is...like the afterlife, then? And just how often did you have to fight those Hollow things?

I did not often go out in to the field. But every area has a shinigami assigned to defend it, and they engage most often.

I see...S-so it sounds like you guys are pretty well-organized. Are the Hollows much of a threat against you?

We are, yes. Our organization has been in place thousands of years.

The lower level ones are no threat to me. I am a vice captain. Arrancar are a threat, however.

That's longer than any civilizations I know of, that's for sure.

I'm guessing these Arrancar aren't so nice...

Many shinigami are hundreds of years old- I myself am relatively young.

They are... "evolved" hollows.

So uglier and nastier, basically. Is that about right?

Technically, they are "less ugly". Hollows usually have bestial forms and masks over their faces. Arrancar gain a more humanoid form by breaking their mask and releasing further power.

Well, if you want to be technical...

So does that mean the mask holds back their power? Why do they wear the things in the first place?

They are created with them- because they are created from a single corrupted human soul. While they are still one soul, they remember their pasts and their crimes- and out of guilt, hide their faces from the living in that manner.

They just hide out of guilt? ...And feeding on other human souls is what causes them to stop feeling guilty about their crimes--is that how it is?

It is how they become more powerful- and the only thing they know how to do.

Have you heard stories in your world... for example, a man dies and his wife follows him soon after? And people explain it in various ways... dying of grief, for example. In my world, that is the work of Hollows. Their first victims are those they knew in life.

What? I-I've never heard of anything like that before. That's...just in your world, right?

I have heard similar stories from other worlds- but I can not be positive as to the cause in others.

M-maybe those people just...I don't know, give up or something? That's a pretty lame way to die, but there's nothing like that in my world.
